Safeguarding Your Financial Information and Identity

Contact Credit Bureaus

If you think your identity has been stolen, you should close or suspend accounts at risk. While you're at it, take a further step: Contact one of the three major credit bureaus (Trans Union, Experian, and Equifax) and ask them to place a fraud alert on your credit report. You only have to notify one. The fraud alert lets potential creditors know they should contact you before opening new accounts or making changes to your existing accounts. That way identity thieves won't be able to open new accounts using your information – or change how your current accounts are handled.
